Behind this gorgious vista, nestled between the water and some railroad tracks, lies a modest historical retreat called Bayview Wildwood. The Workers Health and Safety Centre hosted their two week instructors trianing course at the establishment, roughly six hours from Windsor, a short drive north of Orillia. I didn't know it then, but that vista pailed in comparison to the intensive, indepth course they would roll out.
The Centre is very selective when choosing instructors to present their training programs. It is understandable, health and safety is a very serious and crucial protection for workers. I was awarded a scholarship to attend the course this year. After a good nights sleep and hearty breakfast, I met my classmates and instructor Joanne. I can't put to words the impact she would have on everyone of us. As if being so far away from family, friends, co-workers, and sharing a room with a stranger wasnt enough. It was intentionally combined with the course load masterfully designed to break you down, see what your made of and put you back together. As my classmates will atest, the course pushes you beyond your comfort zone to a place of self discovery.
We will forever remember the short time our pathes crossed. I wil proudly add Joanne to the list of teachers that have had a profound effect on me. The WHSC is a resource that should be bargained into every collective agreement and the only choice for worker training. Many of the instructors themselves have contributed to or been consulted on some of the very legislation and regulation we have today. If you are passionate about helping others and interested in health and safety sign up for Level one with the centre. Hopefully, it will inspire you as much as it has me.
